Advantages Of Wood Over Other Materials
If you were to take a survey, and ask home owners across the country their opinion about wood fences and its use, the answers will vary from one home owner to the next. There are some factors they will all agree on though, one of them is the natural look of wood that just draws people to them. It blends in well to the surroundings and landscaping, and it cost less per linear foot than steel, wrought iron, vinyl and aluminum fences.
What Are The Best Woods To Use For Fencing
It all depends on the fence design and how you’d like to treat your wood. For example. If you like the look of picket fences or just want to build a post and rail, the type of wood you choose for this project doesn’t really matter if you’re planning on painting it. The best wood choices here are Pine or Fir. If you’re planning on treating the wood with a stain, or want it to weather naturally over time, Cedar is your best choice.
Red Cedar Versus White Cedar
Red cedar is considered the best choice for wood fences. Its a tad stronger than White Cedar, but both are very resistant to insect infestation and rotting and stand up well to all different types of weather conditions. Red Cedar is indigenous to the western part of the country and White to the east. Go with the cedar choice that grows in your neck of the woods. Pressure treated lumber is a great cost savings route, but it doesn’t stand up as well to weathering as cedar does. Cracking and splitting is inevitable with this option. With any wood fence, regular maintenance will add to its logevity.
Most home owners gravitate to the stockade style or privacy fence style with wood fencing. The stockade style can offer a more open feel and look by incorporating spaces and gaps in the fence design. Hybrid lattice work is very attractive and offer both privacy and some what of a view. Some other styles to consider are the post and rail and split rail fencing, both not as confining as a solid wood fence.
Most fencing installations should be left to professional fencing companies. If you’re the kind that like the do-it-yourself projects, be sure to research the installation extensively before you begin your project. Consult with local fence installers for advice and make sure you know what you’re doing. The last thing you want if for your fence to collapse, opening you up to all kinds of issues and more expenses.
